Identification

  • variable in color from brown, gray, green or reddish to black with dark markings

  • dry, warty skin

  • relatively short legs used for hopping

  • toes have little or no webbing

Diet

  • feeds on insects and small invertebrates 

Location

  • live on land 

  • lay egg masses of up to 12,000 eggs in ponds in ponds or lakes

  • is the only toad found in Eastern Canada

Cool Facts

  • have a sticky tongue that is used to capture prey

  • tadpoles and adult toads have poison glands

  • adult toads will flip over onto their back and play dead when threatened

  • have been know to live up to 36 years
